Pirelli introduces new Collezione tyres for Porsche 911s from the 1964 model to type 997, combining vintage style with modern technology.
Tradition and Innovation Can Coexist – Pirelli Motorsport Director
Pirelli has introduced a special set of tyres, specifically designed for classic and youngtimer Porsche 911 models, from the 1964 edition to the type 997. This offering makes Pirelli the “go-to” supplier for Porsche enthusiasts, thanks to its Collezione range that also offers tyres for other Porsche models, such as the 356, 914, 928 and 944. Each tyre bears the “N” marking, which means it has been approved by Porsche.
Pirelli‘s Collezione tyres for Porsche combine modernity with a classic touch. They are developed using modern materials and technologies to offer maximum safety and compliance with current regulations. However, the tyres will not look “out of place” when fitted to the classic and youngtimer models.
“Our collaboration with Porsche about tyres for classic Porsche models demonstrates how tradition and innovation can successfully coexist. Our Research and Development departments work together in a consolidated manner to create dedicated tyres that allow classic Porsche models to continue travelling safely and efficiently. It’s a relationship that is constantly renewed,” said Mario Isola, Pirelli Motorsport Director.
Pirelli Foundation plays a big part in preserving the classic, original details of the tyres used by the old Porsches. For years, the foundation has successfully preserved the designs and specificities of historic tyres in an archive of approximately 4 linear kilometres of materials on Pirelli‘s history, from 1872 to the present day.
Pirelli‘s relationship with Porsche began not long after the first 911 was introduced (as the 901) at the 1963 International Motor Show Germany (IAA) in Frankfurt, West Germany. A few years after the debut, the production versions were equipped with the Cinturato CN36, the first Pirelli sports car tyre to use steel belts.
When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, Pirelli equipped the model with the Cinturato P7, a tyre originally developed for rally races and later a successful product in the road range. It was the first ultra-low-profile tyre to be introduced to the market. Its main feature was its lower sidewall relative to the tread width with a previously unseen aspect ratio, which significantly increased grip when cornering.
The following generations of 911 used the P Zero Rosso, a tyre designed to offer a balance between high performance and comfort, as well as low noise. Then, in 2005, when the Porsche 911 (type 997) was introduced, Pirelli equipped it with the P Zero.
“Preserving the heritage of our old- and young timers by ensuring the availability of premium spare parts is a matter of dedication for us. Together with Pirelli’s renowned expertise, we’ve been able to further enhance our offering of high-performance tyres for our classic cars,” said Ulrike Lutz, Director for Classic at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.
