Goodyear Malaysia donated tyres to Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 20, Shah Alam (SK 20), for the school’s recreational activities and workshop training.
Goodyear Malaysia Cares for Environment & Community
With a history that could be traced back to 1929, Goodyear Malaysia says it is committed to caring for the environment and community. Recently, the company reinforced this commitment by donating tyres to Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 20, Shah Alam (SK 20), for the school’s recreational activities and workshop training to impart the importance of recycling in students.
In addition to using the tyres for practical purposes, some tyres were used as decoration. The SK 20 school aims to reuse the tyres and create sculptures that would offer a different learning environment for its students. This idea was inspired by the unveiling of two statues crafted by professional sculptors, made entirely out of Goodyear tyres, at the 2018 Cotton Bowl. The Cotton Bowl is an annual college American football match, played between two teams in the semi-finals as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college football league.
Anthony Fonseka, Marketing Communication and Service Manager, Goodyear Malaysia, said: “We are more than happy to support this community in which we are proud to be a part of. We know the tyres are being put to good use, so we hope that this would inspire and empower the students of SK 20 to take care of the environment by constantly finding new ways to repurpose used items in a safe environment.
“The tyres that we donated to the school would have been recycled and so are unsuitable for the market. We are happy to see them serving new decorative and practical reasons, which to us is the same as being recycled. We now have more space in our inventory and the school has new tyres being put to good use. We’d say it’s a win-win situation!” he added.
This initiative was spearheaded by Aizatul Ashraf, a teacher at SK 20, who noticed the bare school grounds. At the handover ceremony, Aizatul said: “Schoolchildren absorb information and knowledge from many sources, including their surroundings. By showing how the tyres are used as pots for plants and decorations around the school, I hope that they learn that everything could be put to good use with the right mindset.”
