According to Hongsik Jeon, Managing Director of E-Rain Motorsport, the Hankook competition tyre distributor, the Sepang 1000Km Endurance Race had been held annu- ally in December since 2009 at the Sepang International Circuit. The race continued from the successful run of the 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race, but unlike the MMER the Sepang 1000Km is a touring car race and is limited to vehicles with an engine capacity of under 1800cc (cubic centimetres).
This year saw 30 cars participating in the race as com- pared to 28 last year. All the cars were running on Ventus TD Z221. Jeon said: “Hankook is the pinnacle of semi- slick, R-compound tyres made in Korea.” It is available in 3 different compounds from C3, C5 and C7 in sizes from 15” to 18”. The best-selling compound in Malaysia is C5 and even C7 is very popular for the Saturday Night Fe- ver - time attack event. Preliminary tests in Japan proved that the Ventus TD Z221 was the fastest tyre in its class.
“What really amazed the racers was that as an Ultra High Performance tyre (UHP), the Ventus RS3 Z222 had demonstrated excellent overall performance and durabil- class last year, which was the 1-hour endurance event, a few teams had insisted on using slick tyres although they were very expensive when compared to UHP tyres.
