Passenger vehicles continued to play a pivotal role in sustaining Malaysia’s automotive sector, as the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) reported a Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 68,007 units in May 2025—a 12.4 per cent increase from April’s 60,527 units.

The improved performance was largely supported by stronger passenger vehicle (PV) sales, which accounted for 62,757 units, despite representing a slight 3 per cent dip year-on-year (YoY) compared to May 2024. The rebound follows April’s holiday-shortened month and was aided by more working days, sustained promotional campaigns, and ongoing deliveries of vehicles ordered in the first quarter.

Although passenger car sales showed resilience, they weren’t entirely immune to market challenges. Year-to-date (YTD), PV sales stood at 295,213 units as of May 2025—down 3 per cent from the 304,249 units registered in the same period last year.

On the production front, passenger vehicle output in May 2025 reached 62,291 units, down from 69,526 units in May 2024. Cumulatively, January to May production dropped to 280,589 units, representing a 10 per cent decline from 311,692 units in the same timeframe last year.

MAA noted that while the broader recovery in May offers a positive signal, production levels are still adjusting to ongoing supply chain realignments and inventory management strategies.

Looking ahead, MAA cautioned that June 2025 TIV is expected to dip due to a scheduled one-week plant shutdown by several major carmakers during the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays. The temporary slowdown is anticipated to affect both sales and production volumes.

Despite the slight year-on-year contraction, the passenger vehicle segment continues to anchor Malaysia’s automotive industry, supported by sustained consumer demand, new model launches, and attractive financing options.
