Pirelli Scorpion All Season SF3 tyre for SUVs with Elect and PNCS features

Pirelli has unveiled the Scorpion All Season SF3 for SUVs, featuring Elect technology for EVs, enhanced braking, and noise reduction.

Pirelli Used AI to Select the Best Materials for Its Scorpion All Season SF3

Pirelli has launched the SUV version of its Cinturato All Season SF3 called the Scorpion All Season SF3.

Designed to provide safety and versatility in various weather conditions, the Scorpion All Season SF3 bears the 3PMSF marking, indicating its success in passing tests in winter conditions. It is rated “B” for external noise on the EU label and is ranked in classes A and B for rolling resistance—which ensures longevity and reduced emissions.

According to Pirelli‘s official website, the Scorpion All Season SF3 has also passed an independent test conducted by Dekra with excellent results in cumulative braking.

Two key differences separate the Scorpion and the Cinturato. Reinforced tread blocks with larger dimensions and a progressive entry geometry that gradually increases the contact patch between the tread block and the road make sure the Scorpion can support the handling and weight of SUVs. These features allow the cars to avoid sudden pressure peaks and interact more smoothly with the asphalt, thereby reducing vibrations and road noise.

However, not all features of the Cinturato were changed. The tread design, featuring an adaptive structure, still can be found on the Scorpion. It includes 3D sipes that change shape from straight lines to a zigzag pattern as the tyres wear down, increasing the surface area capable of gripping snow even as tread depth decreases.

The adaptive design also affects the movement of the sipes. The ability to close and compact under high contact stress transforms the tread from a winter-like siped pattern to a more summer-like profile. This ensures an effective performance on dry surfaces and during braking.

New materials, formulated for stiffness, stability, and response at high temperatures, were also used in creating the Scorpion All Season SF3. A new mix of polymers with “specific microstructures” ensures high mobility at low temperatures, new natural-origin resins improve grip on cold surfaces, and liquid polymers enhance snow performance without compromising wet traction.

Pirelli used its AI-based Virtual Compounder tool to select the best materials for the Scorpion All Season SF3. The engineering team also used 3D modelling to design the compound and trad pattern in parallel.

The Pirelli Scorpion All Season SF3 is available in sizes from 17 to 21 inches. An Elect marking can be found on its surface, denoting models equipped with technology suitable for BEVs and PHEVs. It is also offered with a Pirelli Noise Cancelling System (PNCS), which reduces tyre rolling noise thanks to a special sound-absorbing material inside the tyre.
