Pirelli has developed three bespoke tyres—P Zero R, Trofeo RS, and Winter 2—for the McLaren W1, each made with over 50% sustainable materials.
Pirelli Created the Tyres in Collaboration with McLaren
Pirelli has equipped the new McLaren W1 supercar with three bespoke tyres, the P Zero R, P Zero Trofeo RS, and P Zero Winter 2, created in collaboration with the UK-based luxury automaker. These tyres are offered specifically for the McLaren W1, for which Pirelli is the sole tyre supplier.
The Pirelli P Zero R, P Zero Trofeo RS, and P Zero Winter 2 are made from than 50 per cent bio-based and recycled materials, as certified by independent body Bureau Veritas according to ISO 14021.
The research and development (R&D) collaboration between Pirelli and McLaren to create the P Zero R, P Zero Trofeo RS, and P Zero Winter 2 began in a virtual environment, supported by state-of-the-art driving simulation technology. After that, various tests to assess tyre performance were held at the Nardò circuit in southern Italy, Idiada track in Spain, and Pirelli’s Sottozero Centre in Sweden.

Featuring a hybrid powertrain capable of delivering up to 1,275PS and 1,340Nm through the rear wheels alone, the McLaren W1 can go from 0 to 300 km/h in less than 12.7 seconds, with a maximum speed electronically limited to 350km/h. The supercar also has a Race mode that generates up to 1,000 kg of downforce.
The P Zero R—the first developed for a McLaren—is designed for daily driving, the P Zero Trofeo RS is for occasional track day usage, while the P Zero Winter 2 is to be used in colder seasons. All three tyres for the W1 will be produced at Pirelli’s plant in Settimo Torinese, Italy.
As the first supercar tyres made with over 50 per cent bio-based and recycled materials, the bespoke P Zero tyres mark an important milestone for Pirelli‘s industrial plan, which aims to launch the first tyres containing 80% of these materials by 2030.
The launch of the P Zero E in 2023 was a key step of this journey, as it became the first high-performance tyre on the market to contain more than 55% bio-based and recycled materials and feature a triple “A” certification on the European tyre label. This tyre also introduced the logo that now identifies all Pirelli products containing at least 50 per cent sustainable materials.
