Continental Tyre Malaysia has announced plans to cease production at its Alor Setar plant by the end of 2025, affecting approximately 950 employees.

Continental Tyre Malaysia Optimises Operations with Planned Plant Closure

The decision follows a comprehensive business review aimed at enhancing the company’s competitiveness and performance in the Asia-Pacific region.

The German automotive supplier stated that shifting customer demands have prompted the need to optimise its product portfolio and manufacturing footprint locally. As part of its efforts to support affected employees, Continental will offer career counselling services and assist with finding alternative employment opportunities both within and outside the company.

Despite the closure, Continental reaffirmed its commitment to Malaysia, highlighting the country’s importance in its Asia-Pacific strategy. The company pledged to maintain strong relationships with its customers and partners in the region.

The Alor Setar facility, which began operations on December 20, 1979, has a long history. It became a fully owned subsidiary of Continental in May 2012 and covers an area of approximately 133,000 square metres. The plant has been responsible for producing tyres for passenger cars, small lorries, and motorcycles.

In a statement, Continental emphasised that the closure is part of its broader strategy to adapt to evolving market needs and to continue driving sustainable growth across its key markets.
