From RM120 to RM420: What Do You Really Get in a 195/55R15 Tyre?

Walk through any Malaysian tyre shop and you’ll notice stacks of 195/55R15s.

Malaysia’s 195/55R15 boom

The size is original equipment on hugely popular B‑segment hatchbacks and sedans such as the Perodua Myvi, Honda Jazz, Mazda 2 and Toyota Vios, so volume demand is high. That popularity breeds choice: our March 2025 snapshot lists more than 35 distinct models, with prices stretching from just RM123 to RM422. A spread that wide tells two stories—how intensely brands compete for wallet‑share, and how Malaysian drivers can tailor their spend without sacrificing fitment.

Premium tier: performance (RM300 – RM420+)

At the top sit global heavyweights selling brand equity and advanced compounds. Michelin’s Pilot Sport 3 (RM340) and XM2+ (RM319), Bridgestone’s Potenza RE004 (RM326) and Yokohama’s Advan Neova AD09 (RM422) [Track day tyre] command a 40‑60 per cent premium over the market average, promising sharper wet grip, lower noise and longer tread life. Continental’s new ComfortContact 7 (RM226–247 online, but often RM260+ at brick‑and‑mortar) shows how European brands straddle the line—pricing their touring rubber just below the halo names yet banking on a reputation for German engineering.

Value & mid‑range: stretching the ringgit (RM150 – RM260)

Korean and Japanese challengers—Kumho Ecsta PS31 (RM167‑189), Hankook Ventus Prime 4 (RM220) and Toyo’s CR1/TR1 duo (RM205‑230)—anchor the mid‑segment, offering 70‑90 per cent of premium performance for roughly three‑quarters of the price. Slip further down and Chinese or private‑label brands such as Neolin (RM123), Sunwide (RM125) and GoodRide (RM158) dominate, undercutting premium names by up to 65  per cent. Their aggressive pricing has carved out a loyal base among ride‑hailing drivers and budget‑conscious owners, but buyers trade away brand cachet, warranty depth and proven longevity. The end result is a healthy tiered marketplace: from RM120 economy options to RM400 track‑day heroes, Malaysia’s favourite tyre size delivers something for every budget.
