The Malacca Tyre Trade Association celebrated its 6th anniversary with a mini exhibition and a grand dinner on 30th July at the New Lagoon Restaurant, Melaka.
Companies that participated in the mini exhibition were Corida Sdn Bhd, Westlake Marketing Sdn Bhd, LSK Auto Resources, Boto Tyres Sdn Bhd, One Solution Equipment Supply Sdn Bhd, OSK Dagangan Sdn Bhd, Tyrim Resources Sdn Bhd and Future Lab Sdn Bhd.
The event was well attended by more than 600 people, including the new Chairman Foo Chong Seng and committee members of the Malaysian Association of Tyre Retreaders & Dealers Societies (MATRDS), members from the various state tyre associations, representatives from the tyre manufacturers and tyre servicing equipment supplier as well as guests and the media.
In his opening speech, Malacca Tyre Trade Association Chairman Datuk Yuen Chin Kiong said the tyre industry was currently facing a slowdown. Apart from the severe competition, the industry also encountered a serious labour shortage. With the increasing number of new tyre companies, the workers have more options, leading to the high staff turnover.
“The tyre industry is not allowed to recruit foreign workers and the young people in Malaysia have no interest as they consider it ‘dirty’ and hard. Thus, we urge MATRDS to discuss the labour shortage issue with the government and reconsider the ban in recruiting foreign workers for our sector,” he added.
He pointed out that today there were many websites that sold tyres online. To attract consumers, their prices were much lower than the market price. However, when consumers went to the shops, they had to pay additional charges. This, he said, had badly affected the reputation and business operation of the tyre industry. He urged MATRDS to intervene in the web postings and price undercutting that would harm the industry as a whole.
The two highlights of the event were the swearing-in ceremonies of the MATRDS and the Malacca Tyre Trade Association new committee members for the year 2017/2018.
There were also 3 items on auction. LSK Auto Resources donated a Launch scanner X-431 Pro (minimum bid from RM4,500), One Solution Equipment Supply donated a John Bean Wheel Balancer B100 and a Wonder 3D TW-99A Wheel Aligner (minimum bid from RM20,000). The minimum bid was from RM2000.
Other highlights were the presentation of cash rewards to the members’ children with good study results, donations to St John Ambulance of Malaysia Haemodialysis in Bacang, contribution to MATRDS, a cake cutting ceremony, toasting and a lucky draw.
