Sensing Core,Sumitomo’s sensorless tyre tech, proved its reliability during the 2025 Nürburgring Endurance Series with Falken Porsche cars.
Sumitomo Aims to Use Sensing Core for Autonomous Fleets
Sumitomo Rubber Industries (Sumitomo) has successfully tested its Sensing Core technology at the 2025 Nürburgring Ring Endurance (NLS) on the Falken Tyre‘s Porsche 911 GT3 R cars.
The sensorless technology was developed by Sumitomo to enhance safety, efficiency, and even optimise the timing of pit stops. It uses the tyre itself as a sensor to monitor tyre wear, road surface, wheel load, and pressure in real-time without needing any additional hardware. The system also detects loose wheel nuts.
Sumitomo deployed the Sensing Core in every NLS race at the Nürburgring throughout the 2025 season, mainly to monitor tyre pressures and deflation. Thanks to this technology, the Falken Tyre team gained an advantage by receiving earlier warnings, which enabled it to adjust its pit stop strategy.
Looking ahead, with the technology now proven in the harsh conditions of motorsport, Sumitomo aims to further apply this technology in more applications, such as autonomous fleets.
