Car Sales Drops 27 Per Cent

Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) stated that lower sales in January were due to various reasons.

MAA Expects Lower Sales in February

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), the vehicle sales in January 2021 reduced by 24 per cent to 32,829 units compared to 42,942 units achieved in the similar corresponding month in 2020.

The passenger car segment dropped by 27 per cent to 28,872 units from 39,410 units.

MAA stated in their latest press communication that the lower sales in January were due to various reasons including the enforcement of Movement Control Order (MCO), which has affected the traffic volume to showrooms.

The communication also stated that most purchases had been brought forward to December 2020 resulting in lower stocks in January 2021 for some companies. This combined with the impact of shutdowns from some part suppliers due to Covid-19 resulted in the short supply of components and parts.

Year-on-year numbers for January were lower than the corresponding period last year by 10,538 units, or 27 per cent lower.

As for the production, car manufacturers produced 39,666 units in January as compared to 45,416 units in 2020, with the passenger car segment decreased by 15 per cent to 36,186 units from 42,527 units.

MAA expects that sales volume in February 2021 will be lower than January 2021 due to shorter working month.
